  1. Prolonged sitting or lying in bed.
    Physical inactivity reduces blood circulation, especially in the legs. This can lead to swelling, varicose veins, and in more severe cases, deep vein thrombosis.
  2. Insufficient fluid intake.
    Many older people feel less thirsty, but that doesn’t mean they need less water. Dehydration leads to thickening of the blood, which makes circulation more difficult and increases the risk of blood clots.
  3. Wearing clothes that are too tight.
    Trousers, stockings, or belts that are too tight can compress the veins, especially in the legs and abdomen, thus reducing blood flow.
